QUEENSLAND

COUNTRY ON TAMBORINE & BITTERSWEET COUNTRY

Hay1.jpgLong regarded by many as the doyen of country style in Queensland, Sue Hay left her many devotees distraught when, nearly two years ago, she decided to sell the Montville country emporium which she and husband Peter had built from the ground up and had turned into a country-lovers’ Mecca. But Sue’s exit from the world of country decorating was not for long, as she and Peter have now opened two beautiful new country stores in the Sunshine State that are drawing crowds from miles, not to mention from across the border and far flung reaches of the globe. One is located within the famed arts and crafts ‘Gallery Walk’ of beautiful Tamborine Mountain (in the Gold Coast hinterland) and the other is within the heart of Samford in Brisbane's north.

Hay2_000.jpgBoth stores ooze the wonderful country character and style for which Sue is renowned, with prims galore which have been artfully mixed with a huge host of more traditional country wares. And the majority of the items in both shops are not to be found anywhere else as Sue and Peter have sourced the majority of their stock from the United States – the heartland of the country look. Already they have had two huge containers of unique stock arrive and Sue’s off shopping in America again soon to add to the incredible cache. Both store also boast year-round Christmas room displays, the added feature within the Paddington outlet being a shabby chic room bursting with all things feminine and refined.

In typical Sue and Peter tradition, both stores also be host Christmas in July celebrations (something which the couple became renowned for when they operated their Montville outlet) so if you would like to be invited just contact either shop and you’ll go onto the invitation list. Both the Tamborine and Samford outlets will also be hosting several very special VIP nights throughout the year, with store specials, discounts and much more. Again, an invitation is as simple as making contact with either one of the shops.

Hay4.jpg Hay6.jpg

With the amazing success of both operations, Sue and Peter are already contemplating the opening of several more exclusive country outlets over the next two years. A visit to Country On Tamborine and Samford's Bittersweet Country quickly reveals why the couple believe there is a huge future for the country look in the Sunshine State. They do it so well, and all who venture along can’t help but fall in love with the magical, inspiring way in the world of country is so superbly presented. To discover for yourself, a visit to one – or both – of the stores is essential! In addition, Sue operates a wonderful country website called Village Country – www.villagecountry.com – which showcases many of the exclusive handmade and imported items available in both her Queensland country stores, the online operation thus making a unique world of country available to devotees from all over Australia … in fact, the world!

SOMETHINGS COUNTRY

SomethingsCountry3.jpg SomethingsCountry1.jpg

Located in the South Burnett region of the Sunshine State, there’s a very special country business that has a rather specific focus. Situated in Haly Street, Kingaroy, there’s something very significant about the enterprise. Everything that one can possibly think of in the way of country homewares and collectables is to be found within … in fact, the guarantee is that there’s something country here for everyone. Hence the name of the business – Somethings Country!

SomethingsCountry2.jpgHaving operated for over two years now, Somethings Country has dramatically grown and expanded in this relatively short period of time, the store’s 120 square metres brimming with the hugest selection of fabulous country treasures – from traditional enamelware and wooden homewares to throws and quilts, ornaments and collectables galore, signs and framed prints, beautiful crockery and china, loads of things shabby and chic, folk art and cast iron wares. There are wallpaper borders and pieces of traditional folk art, hand-knitted scarves and beautiful handcrafted doilies. There’s divine dolls and irresistible teddies, handmade soaps and beautiful original gift cards.

SomethingsCountry6.jpgThe store’s inventory also extends to rustic wares such as wagon wheels and water features, cream cans and other such traditional old-fashioned country items. Cast iron cistern pumps, pot hangers and weather vanes, birdhouses and ‘chook’ items such as clocks and pictures, rusty tin treasures and so much more crams the shelves of the shop as well as decorating the walls and every other available surface, thus confirming the store’s mantra that here there’s always something – if not many things – for everyone!

Besides the enormous variety, the other thing which makes Somethings Country so appealing is the thought the owners have put in to ensuring that the enterprise is run according to old-fashioned values and ideals of customer care and hospitality. Pram and wheelchair friendly, the shop even boasts a special playpen area where the little ones can safely amuse themselves while Mum and Dad take the time – and have the peace – to explore the store and its outstanding selection of country wares.

SomethingsCountry5.jpgSomethingsCountry4.jpgBeing an integral part of the local community is also another reason behind the success of this family-based business. Principal Janelle Frohloff tells that while the store now has over 100 national suppliers, more than 30 are local artisans who exclusively supply their handcrafted and original wares to Somethings Country. With lay-by offered as well as a Customer VIP loyalty card, it’s no wonder that the business has gained such outstanding support throughout the region. And with a comprehensive website – filled with all the store’s best treasures – available to shoppers across the nation, there really can be no dispute to the claim that at Somethings Country there definitely is something for everyone!

EVERYTHING COUNTRY

Everything3_000.jpgAs its very name states, when it comes to country, they have absolutely everything! But more than the usual array of fine country wares and accessories, Everything Country of Kilcoy in the southeast of Queensland (just under 100klm northwest of Brisbane) specialises in superb handcrafted furniture and wooden decorator pieces of such diversity that the business really should be renamed! ‘Beyond Everything Country’ or ‘Everything Country And So Much More’ are suggestions!

Everything Country is the conception, and the enduring passion, of John and Carol Tones. John is a very skilled bush craftsman who has, over the years, perfected his craft and evolved a unique interpretation of rustic, rugged country furnishings that has ultimately led to his original pieces being sought out by decorators and collectors across Australia. John makes his enduring furnishings and accessories under the Sheepstation Creek 1880 label, the full repertoire of his items being available through Everything Country, and, very soon, through a number of selected outlets as the Tones focus their energies on franchising (all public enquiries regarding franchise opportunities most welcome).

Everything2.jpgMeanwhile, Carol Tones is the driving force behind the Everything Country retail outlet, selecting the perfect accessories and decorator items to complement the furnishings, as well as having design input and even assisting in the hand-finishing of a range of pieces using Everything Country’s very own stain- and oil-based finishes.

Over the years since commencing operation in Kilcoy, Everything Country has been widely featured in all the leading national country decorating magazines, thus further promoting their unique, first-class wares to the Australian audience. Working closely with a reputable freight company, no one throughout the nation is ever out of reach when it comes to purchasing. Custom-crafting is also an Everything Country specialty, so no matter where a customer may be, all one needs to do is phone, email or fax measurements and requirements through to Carol and John and a free quote will be provided. It couldn’t be more simple!

Everything1.jpg Everything5.jpg Everything7.jpg

No order is too small or large either. From a bread box to an entire country kitchen installation, from a storage bin to a bed and even a bathroom vanity or bar, Everything Country does it all. They also specialise in beautiful timber-framed mirrors made to measure, plus can dress up any furnishing pieces with special paint treatments or even vintage reproduction advertising signs.

Everything4.jpgThe selection of complementary accessories in the Kilcoy store is, as already mentioned, just about endless … from lamps and figurines, to jug and bowl sets, pretty shabby chic-style wares and rustic Australiana pieces. There’s country gift lines, soaps and oils, incense and beautiful jewellery – all in support of the fact that here there’s everything … and more! The jewellery deserves special mention, Everything Country being the exclusive outlet for Debs Designs' handcrafted jewellery pieces which feature beautiful glass beads and silver accents - many of the 'raw' elements now being available in store as well (including spacers, findings, closures, tigers tail wire plus beautiful pearl and crystal beads). Very soon the range will be further extended with the introduction of first-class 9ct gold and sterling silver jewellery, all under the direction of Debs Designs.

Capitalising on all the success and growth of the business, and in response to increased public demand, John and Carol are extremely excited to announced that, in February 2007, they added another string to their bow with the opening of another wonderful concept store .... in Heritage Place Shopping Village in Lear Jet Drive at Caboolture on the beautiful Queensland Sunshine Coast. In addition to the outstanding country and rustic-style furniture, homewares, gifts and crafts for which they are renowned, the Tones also offer custom framing here, a huge selection of beads (from crystal and glass beads to shell and freshwater pearls, as well as finding and tools), plus more beautiful jewellery in the store (including stunning pieces by Debs Designs). A full programme of classes in beading and jewellery making is also offered.

Everything6.jpgMeanwhile, back at the Kilcoy 'base', in-house parties can be arranged; mail and phone orders are most welcome, and so too bus tours. The shop is open 10am to 6pm weekdays (closed Tuesday) and from 10am to 3pm on weekends. To complement the Kilcoy operation there is even a comprehensive website meaning that no matter where one may be, everything that is country, and so much more, is always easily accessible. The Caboolture store is located next to Subway in Lear Jet Drive and is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, plus 9am to 3pm on weekends. KARLENE ATKINS OF KATKINS DESIGNS

Katkins8.jpgThey have a wonderful sense of innocence … an enchanting personality and unique countenance with eyes that transfix and cause one to instantly fall in love! The cloth doll creations of textile designer Karlene Atkins of Katkins Designs are all like this … they captivate and charm. And each doll is a reflection of some aspect of the character and life experience of the delightful lady, embodying special memories and emotions of the journey of life. So too her other inspired creations – especially her wall hangings – which each reflect a little of the true ‘essence’ of the lady herself!

Karlene has been at the top of her craft for nearly ten years now, her superb cloth dolls and other textiles designs being renowned for the message of simplicity, innocence and even vulnerability they present. And because they are each conceived with a deep sense of love, the making process by people of all levels of stitchery skill offers not only a wonderfully creative experience but also one that is always personal and often even cathartic.

Today, a Karlene Atkins’ Katkins Designs’ creation is instantly recognisable. To date, Karlene has produced nearly 40 original designs for beautiful cloth dolls and related textile creations such as framed face stitcheries and wall hangings. Featured here is a sampling of just three of her very latest wallhanging designs which each boast simple embroidery, pencil colouring and a little quilting.

Firstly, there’s ‘Viola’ (above left) which is a gorgeous quilted stitchery wallhanging inspired by the flowers growing in Karlene’s very own garden. As she explains, “their happy faces come to life before your very eyes”. The pattern for ‘Viola’ – which includes photographs and ready-to-trace design outlines, as well as clear instructions on stitching, colouring and finishing – is available for $12 plus $2 p&h. The kit – which includes the pattern as well as a pre-printed stitchery (which is otherwise available on its own as a grey outline printed on to natural quilter’s muslin for $11 plus $1 p&h), threads, border fabrics, backing and pellon – sells for $38 plus $5 for p&h.

Katkins7.jpgThe second new quilted stitchery wallhanging just released by Karlene, under the Katkins Designs' label, is ‘Sweetpea’ (right) . More than being inspired by the annual fragrant blooms which grow in her garden beds, the delightful hanging embodies – for Karlene – warm memories of special loved ones who have grown sweetpeas over the years and is sure to evoke similar reminiscences for all who create their own rendition of this beautiful textile. Like her ‘Viola’ wallhanging, ‘Sweetpea’ is 13ins by 16.5ins when finished (33cm by 42cm) and incorporates the same simple stitchery, pencil colouring and easy quilting. The pattern is $12 plus $2 p&h; the pre-printed stitchery outline on quilter’s muslin is $11 plus $1 p&h; and the kit – which includes the pattern, pre-printed stitchery and threads plus border fabrics, binding, backing and pellon – is $38 plus $5 p&h.

Katkins9.jpgMeanwhile, the third latest offering from Katkins Designs is Karlene’s other delightful new quilted stitchery wallhanging entitled ‘Fuchsia’ (left). As the name suggests, it features the vibrant fuchsia bloom which, as Karlene tells “always makes me think of twirling ballerinas dressed for the stage in their wonderfully showy costumes”. The hanging incorporates the same simple embroidery, pencil colouring and quilting as the other two aforementioned new releases, and is similarly priced for the pattern, pre-printed stitchery and kit.

For these and the many other gorgeous projects – including her renowned cloth doll creations – available from Katkins Designs, call Karlene direct or click below to go direct to her comprehensive website.

The brainchild of the lovely Carmelina Saunders – the lady behind the former well-loved Li’l Treasures country store at the foot of the NSW Blue Mountains – this new online venture has enabled Carmelina to create a unique shopping experience for all her clients both locally and right across the globe. As she tells “the creation of the online shop instead of a real-time location has enabled me to specialise in a selection of favourite collectables and country wares, and to offer them to all at excellent prices due to reduced overheads.”

LilTreasures2.jpgCoveted Willow Tree angels, renowned Heartwood Creek figurines by famous American folk artist Jim Shore, very special gift lines and a fine selection of personally-chosen decorative homewares fill the ‘cyber shelves’ of Li’l Treasures.  And Carmelina makes the promise that, if it’s not to be found instore at the time you visit, just register with her (via email or phone) what you’re after – be it a special piece of Willow Tree, a hard-to-find Heartwood Creek collectable or some other item normally carried – and she’ll endeavour to track it down for you in less than a fortnight!

To purchase all you have to do is click on the products you like, follow the prompts to the checkout and your purchase is then shipped to you without delay. And if, like a few, you are reluctant to provide your credit card details over the internet, all you have to do is phone us and we’ll deal with your order personally. Importantly, as a matter of utmost security, all credit card details which come through our secure 128bit encrypted server are deleted immediately a transaction is processed, meaning they are never held for any period of time or reason” Carmelina explains.

LilTreasures5.jpgThis is all great news for the nation’s growing band of internet shoppers. ANTIQUE BATHS PTY LTD

AntiqueBath1.jpgSome may consider it the ultimate indulgence . a luxuriating soak in a wonderfully-deep bath filled with piping hot aromatic water. But partake in such an experience and one quickly understands the unsurpassed benefits of the process to not only one's physical wellbeing but also one's sense of calm and healing. The endless appeal of the 'great soak up' is at the heart of Sydney-based business Antique Baths Pty Ltd - a company this is devoted to refurbishing the wonderfully-copious traditional cast iron baths of old, as well as creating a retinue of the finest-quality baths, pedestal basins and other such sanitaryware fashioned according to the highest standards and styling of old. AntiqueBath5.jpg

Antique Baths is owned and operated by Steve and Sue Atherton, the company coming into being almost as an act of fate. When the Athertons - then living in Fremantle (WA) - sent off a vintage bath they owned to be restored, the baked enamel paint result was so disastrous they reasoned that they could certainly do a far superior job. A qualified panel beater and spray painter, Steve thus put his interests in metallurgy into practice and set off exploring the very best processes available, the crucial aim being to create an authentic, superior porcelain enamelling finish for cast iron. The search ultimately led the Athertons back in time . to a traditional enamelling technique which had not been used in Australia since the late 1960s. Steve thus traveled to the UK to discover craftsmen who still used the discipline, and, upon returning back home to Sydney , undertook endless experimentation until he perfected the process. AntiqueBath3.jpgAntique Bath's first factory was subsequently established in Girraween in 1992. Eight years later, the success of the business meant a shift to even larger premises in Pendle Hill, the immense growth and reputation of the Atherton's enterprise ultimately earning them industry recognition as the only experts on cast iron enamelling in Australia.

AntiqueBath2.jpgThe vitreous (porcelain) enamel finish used by Antique Baths to restore vintage cast iron baths is both alkaline and acid resistant to Australian standards, is superbly hygienic, and comes in white or ivory for the inner. The exterior of the bath can then be painted accord to just about any colour a client may request. Because of their accumulated expertise, Antique Baths has, in recent years, added to their repertoire the design and manufacture of a range of freestanding baths which are inspired by the hip and slipper baths, not to mention the full-length soaker tubs of old. They also produce complementing pedestal basins and butlers sinks so that any home can capture the style and elegance of yesteryear within the midst of its hard-working 'water rooms'. And if all this isn't enough, they also restore cooking pots, stoves (such as vintage Agas, Rayburns and Kookas) and parts, and even exhaust manifolds using their highly regarded enamelling system. Export markets have been established throughout the South Pacific and even as far a field as the USA . So, no matter where you are, if you have an old tub in need of a makeover, or hanker for a little vintage elegance in the home by introducing the highest quality enamel furnishings, there really is only one place to go! The family-based operation – which now spans three generations – has been actively sourcing, distributing and manufacturing first-class giftware and a huge selection of hobby craft items for three decades.

Today, Melbourne-based Boyle Industries boasts over 3000 customers across Australia, as well as in New Zealand and even Europe … amazing growth from its earliest days when it was principally focused on the importation of feathers and veiling for the millinery industry (products for which Boyle is still renowned). The  success of the business is attributed to the ever-evolving line-up of items which Boyle sources or has manufactured and then imports, the company always staying one step ahead of the trends.

Boyle1.jpgAnother key is their knack at specialising in particular popular lines, such as their renowned reproduction metal Automobelia collectables which include motorcycles and pickup trucks, tractors (especially John Deere replicas) and old-style fire engines, aeroplanes, vintage racing cars, and traditional vehicles such as FJ and EH Holdens. Significant ‘regulars’ also include beautiful bears (always at amazing prices), rag dolls and gollies (a favourite with country retailers and their customers), and the cutest animals, each one lovingly named by the Boyle crew. There’s over 150 styles in the full collection, covering the gamut from soft and cuddly to weird and wacky … and all irresistible.

Adhesive products are also an important stock item, Boyle Industries having actively developed their range of adhesive and craft products since the 1970s. Today the line-up is more than extensive, the company continuing to expand its general craft range to now be one of the most comprehensive anywhere … with the latest additions being embellishments for card making and scrapbooking. Boyle Industries has also, for many years, been the national distributor for Jo Sonja paints, meaning that they have most craft and art interests well and truly covered.

Boyle3.jpgThe latest additions to the Boyle inventory include old-style cameras in metal, wood and leather which are fashioned on originals dating from the 1920 through to the 1940s. For the retro crowd there’s an amazing new range of power-coated metal furnishings by Dulton, the full selection to be viewed on Boyle Industries’ website.

Annually members of the Boyle team travel overseas to source new products and identify the latest ideas and trends, meaning that the items they import and make available to customers allow Australian retailers to be as up-to-the-minute as the rest of the world! The company also has a design team which can turn a client’s ideas into viable, marketable products … right through the manufacturing process and even to the stage of packaging and despatch. FULHAM IMPORTS

59904-Round-Hat-Boxes-Blue-.jpg

Back in the 1990s, the renowned English Potteries Grimwades Limited – trading as Royal Winton – re-introduced its famous chintz china back onto the world market. Prior to this, the celebrated all-over-floral china had not been produced for over thirty years, and no new items had been designed for nearly 40. At this time, Australian business Fulham Imports was at the vanguard, bringing into the country a selection of beautiful pieces – in a collection of traditional Royal Winton designs such a Welbeck and Old Cottage, Majestic and Stratford – to satisfy the growing domestic demand.

Fulham8_001.jpgIn addition to Royal Winton chintz, Fulham also imported a range of highly-coveted Petunia tableware, all with resounding success as Australians continued to reveal an insatiable appetite for top-quality china and ceramics made according to the traditions and designs of old. This ‘nostalgia revival’ thus set Fulham Imports off on a variety of other new paths as well as the company scoured international markets and manufacturers to secure an ever-growing inventory of beautiful vintage-style pieces to complement the nostalgia-inspired interiors of Australian homes.

D-silly-Cream-1_000.jpgOver recent years, Fulham Imports has added a host of other superb homewares, ceramic collectables and decorator pieces to its catalogue of beautiful traditional-style china, much of which the company has either designed itself or otherwise has had specially re-created from period originals.

Fulham5.jpg Fulham6.jpg Fulham9.jpg

Fulham3.jpgTraditional Willow-style blue and white china; creamware ceramics in a host of irresistible pastel shades; cast iron teapots and, most recently, the addition of superb French-style furniture that is meticulously handpainted and adorned with fine fabrics for that traditional elegant yet shabby look also figure within the present Fulham Imports catalogue. They’re joined by a host of other ceramics, beautiful china and fine porcelain pieces – from coffee mugs and miniature teapots to pretty ewer and basin sets, elegant teasets and so much more.
